Local Enterprise
Strong communities are built on economic stability and opportunity.
And yet, with a large share of San Miguel’s population living under or near the poverty line, many households struggle to build stable livelihoods.
Local enterprise — small businesses, micro-enterprises, artisan cooperatives, sustainable agriculture, and craft industries — offer critical pathways out of economic vulnerability. However, these small ventures often lack access to capital, training, and infrastructure, and face competition and rising cost-of-living pressures.
Centro Educativo Valle de las Lunas
Preparing young people for meaningful employment is central to long-term community stability in San Miguel de Allende, where economic opportunity does not reach all neighborhoods equally and many students leave traditional academic pathways without clear access to skilled work.
Centro Educativo Valle de las Lunas addresses this gap through immersive vocational education rooted in craftsmanship, creativity, and practical skill-building. The organization provides multi-year training programs that prepare young people for adulthood through hands-on learning in carpentry, textile design, natural cosmetics production, food preparation, and other locally relevant trades.
Students do not simply learn techniques. They learn discipline, collaboration, problem-solving, and the confidence that comes from creating tangible products with real economic value. Many graduates move directly into employment, entrepreneurship, or cooperative production, strengthening household stability while preserving traditions of local craftsmanship.
Through SMCF grant support, Valle de las Lunas expanded its technical training capacity with professional woodworking equipment, allowing more students to gain real-world production experience aligned with regional employment opportunities.
In a rapidly changing city, programs like Valle de las Lunas help ensure that economic growth includes pathways for young residents to build sustainable futures within their own community.
